Student Employment

OPR assists with student employment concerns, too. While answers to many questions related to student employment may be found in the Student Employment Toolkit on the HR Services Employment and Compensation webpage, here are some additional items to remember:

  • For many student employees, this may be their first experiences of structured work and workplaces. As a supervisor with that in mind, you might find it helpful to
    • Communicate expectations for workplace behaviors, such as attendance and time reporting, very clearly and reiterate them along the way.
    • Provide incremental opportunities for taking on new responsibilities and learning new tasks.
    • Check in regularly and inquire how work and school are going.
    • Avoid assuming that everything is okay and that student employees are part-time versions of regular staff positions.
